Heading
north for the summer? Don't forget to prepare your southern home
By
Gerald Campbell

Many
of our neighbors are part-time residents, and who can blame
them? They escape the cold winter and the heat of
summer. They also escape most of hurricane season, but not
hurricane hazards to their property.
Planning
and preparation are critical to protecting your property, as
well as your neighbors. The high winds of a hurricane create
damaging missiles out of any loose items, and these "missiles"
do not respect property lines.
A
large part of the solution is simple - clean up, pick up and put
away. Homeowners and do-it-yourselfers can complete many of
these projects. however, you may need a contractor to assist
with some of them. Follow these tips to make your home a safer
place during hurricane season:
Clean
Up
-
Clean
out gutters
-
Remove
dead tree limbs and coconuts
-
Trim
overhanging tree limbs that could fall on your roof or block
emergency vehicle access to your property
-
Move
patio furniture and lawn decorations inside
-
Disconnect
the propane tank from your grill and secure it outside
Prepare
Your Home
-
Secure
utilities (water, electricity) to the extent practical
-
Maintain
your pool's water level as recommended by the manufacturer
-
Brace
garage doors
-
Determine
how your windows will be protected with shutters, as well as
who will do the job and when will it be done
-
Secure
boats and recreation vehicles
Even
though we can plan ahead, disasters still happen and we must be
prepared. Make sure you understand your insurance coverage and
keep your policy and other important papers with you. Have a
reliable contact in the area and make sure your year-round
neighbors can reach you if needed. These actions can help
protect you and your neighbors in the event the "Big
One" comes our way. For more information, contact Lee
