Bonita firefighters donate time to repair family's homeNBC-2 Posted: May 16, 2011 4:50 PM EDTInspired by television and a desire to help the community, Bonita Springs firefighters repaired the home of a well-known soccer enthusiast. Though it was their day off, about 15 Bonita Springs firefighters spent the day sawing, hammering and painting. "Kind of got the idea from the TV show," said Firefighter Richard Scott. Using donated supplies from local businesses, the firefighters pressure washed and painted the whole house and even rebuilt the front porch. And Scott explained that just like any home improvement project, "We're doing a little more than we planned." Juan Romero owns the house. After having a total knee replacement, he couldn't keep up with his home repairs or with work and lost his tomato growing job. Monday, he said he was glad for the help. "It makes a difference. In half-a-day, you know, they did the work I would have had to do for months," he said. Romero may be best known in the community for starting the Casa Mexico youth and adult soccer league about 20 years ago in Bonita Springs. Michael Bumpus said he knows Romero well. "Since he was one of my first coaches, him and my dad always got along and stuff. They both helped me become a better player," Bumpus said. He said he's just glad Romero's getting the assist from the firefighters. "He's been helping numerous people around in the program, so he definitely deserves a little help for himself," Bumpus said. "I never thought I may need some help, but you never know when you need that and when they come over and say, 'Now let's help you.' It fees so good. It feels warm" Romero said. The firefighters will finish up the project on Tuesday. They say it's the first of many for them. "Yeah, we'd like to do this at least once a year, maybe a couple times a year," said Scott. He said the toughest part may be deciding who to help next. The firefighters said they aren't the only ones donating to the Romero family. Sherwin Williams donated all the paint. Sunshine ACE Hardware donated paint rollers and other miscellaneous equipment. And Hallmark Environmental donated all of the landscaping needs.
